"No employer was willing to take the risk of hiring me..."

We hear from our head of recruitment about how he navigated life after the Army to become the huge success he is today!
When I left the Army in 2008, after almost 18 years of Service, I thought I could do anything. The Army trains you to be adaptable and calm under pressure and I thought I'd be a real catch for any employer. I was 37, had been an Infantry Company Commander looking after the training, welfare and operational capability of over 100 personnel. What couldn't I do?
The reality was soooo different.
I applied for loads of jobs and spoke to dozens of recruiters, all of whom seemed to like me and recognised what I had to offer.
A number of them said they would put me forward for jobs as their 'wild card'.
But no one ever hires the 'wild card'.
I was a generalist, with no specific skills and recruitment is all about de-risking, so no employer was willing to take the risk of hiring me.
For the next 11 years, I worked in programme management, ran my own business, was a management consultant and also worked in sales.
In 2019, I finally finished my transition from the Army. I worked out that I was ideally placed to advise veterans what not to do when you transition and became a vocal advocate for Veterans on LinkedIn. I've seen the Veteran space up close and personal and I now work for the best company in this sector. Check out www.weServed.com and let us help you avoid the many pitfalls of military transition.
Let's make the UK the best country in the world to be a Veteran.
You earned this. You deserve this. You served.
